It's October. Your inbox is full of open enrollment reminders. And your health insurance is about to end because your job already did.

Good news: losing coverage in the fall doesn't mean you're stuck guessing. It just means you may have two enrollment windows open at once, and the trick is knowing which one is actually yours.

Open enrollment is a calendar. Special enrollment is a countdown.

Open enrollment is the same dates for everyone. For most Marketplace plans, it starts November 1 and runs into January, though the exact end date can vary by state. Anyone can sign up, job loss or not.

A special enrollment period is personal. It starts when you lose coverage, and the clock is yours alone. Losing job-based health insurance typically opens a window of 60 days to enroll in a Marketplace plan, and in many cases you can also start the process up to 60 days before your coverage ends.

If your coverage ends in October or November, both windows may overlap. If it ended in September, your special enrollment clock may run out before open enrollment even starts. That's why you check your dates before you check any prices.

Find your three dates first

  • Your coverage end date. Not your last day of work. Many employers cover you through the end of the month, and some run it longer if you have severance. Ask HR for the date in writing.
  • Your COBRA election deadline. You typically get 60 days from the date you receive your election notice, and the notice itself can take a few weeks to arrive.
  • Your special enrollment deadline. Count 60 days from your coverage end date and put it on the calendar today.

Write the earliest one at the top of a page. That's the deadline that runs your week.

Does your old employer's open enrollment still matter?

Sometimes, yes. If you're still on the payroll through a notice period, or your coverage continues for a while after your last day, you may still be inside your employer's own open enrollment. Ask whether you can make changes, but don't pick a new plan just because the window is open. You're about to lose that plan anyway.

What matters more is your spouse or partner's employer. Joining their plan after you lose coverage is usually a special enrollment event with a shorter window, often around 30 days. Ask their HR team for the exact deadline as soon as you know your end date.

Don't let open enrollment become a reason to wait. If your special enrollment window is closing sooner than November 1, use it. Waiting for open enrollment can leave a gap where nothing covers you, and a plan chosen later may not start until January.

What to Do Next

  • Get your coverage end date from HR in writing, along with any termination letter you'll need as proof of loss
  • Mark your COBRA, Marketplace, and spouse's plan deadlines on one calendar
  • Price all three options side by side before the earliest deadline, not after
  • If your income dropped, run your new estimate through the Marketplace. It may qualify you for savings
  • Check whether Medicaid is an option in your state, since it doesn't follow the fall calendar
  • Keep every notice, confirmation, and premium receipt in one folder

Our Health Insurance Comparison Worksheet puts COBRA, Marketplace, and spouse's plan costs side by side, and the COBRA Election worksheet helps you organize your paperwork before the deadline. Both are in our Job Loss bundle at lumeway.co/templates. They're organizational tools to help you prepare, not a legal document or a substitute for advice from a licensed professional.

Open enrollment is the loud deadline. Your special enrollment window is the quiet one, and it's usually the one that matters first.
