Template Spotlight: Asset and Property Inventory Worksheet
April 13, 2026
Divorce splits more than a household. It splits finances — and before anyone can negotiate what goes where, you need to know exactly what exists. That sounds simple until you sit down and try to list every bank account, retirement fund, vehicle, piece of real estate, and shared subscription from memory.
Most people miss things. Not because they are careless, but because assets accumulate over years and nobody keeps a running inventory of a marriage. That is the problem this worksheet was built to solve.
Why an asset inventory matters
In most divorce proceedings, both parties are expected to disclose their assets. The completeness and accuracy of that disclosure affects how property gets divided — and whether you walk away with a fair outcome. Forgetting a retirement account or undervaluing a vehicle does not just create paperwork problems later. It can cost you money you are entitled to.
An organized inventory also helps your attorney work more efficiently. The more complete your documentation is before your first meeting, the less time (and billable hours) you spend reconstructing information together.
What the worksheet covers
The Asset and Property Inventory Worksheet walks you through documenting assets category by category. Real estate, vehicles, bank accounts, retirement and investment accounts, personal property, business interests, debts and liabilities. Each section includes guided fields so you capture the details that matter — current value estimates, account numbers, titling, and whether the asset is considered marital or separate property.
There is also space for notes on each item. Maybe a vehicle has a lien. Maybe a savings account was opened before the marriage. Maybe a piece of jewelry was inherited. Those details matter during division, and having them written down in one place means you are not scrambling to remember later.
When to fill it out
The earlier, the better. Ideally, you start this worksheet before your first attorney consultation — or before filing, if you have not yet. The process of listing everything can take a few days because you will need to pull up statements, check titles, and confirm balances. That is normal. Work through one category at a time rather than trying to finish it all in one sitting.
If you have already filed, it is not too late. An organized inventory is useful at any point during proceedings.
The Asset and Property Inventory Worksheet is included in Lumeway’s Divorce & Separation bundle — a set of step-by-step worksheets designed to help you organize every part of the process. Instant download, works in Google Docs.
